DISCLAIMER

In my 10 years plus of Breathwork training and facilitating I have never had anyone harmed or have any serious contra indications using breathwork.

The literature and studies show that it is a very low risk modality and there have been no reported cases of stroke or heart or such like, happening from breathwork.

The advanced breathwork techniques can sometimes bring about intense feelings and emotions. Therefore, it is not recommended for everyone and it is advised to speak to your doctor before embarking on a breathwork session.

Potential Side effects

During a breathwork session you may experience one of many of the following sensations and side effects that are very normal. Your facilitator will guide you through these temporary experiences so that you feel confident about your session and what to do when those sensations arise.

Tetany: this can occur in a session if the client is pushing on the outbreath and breathing too quickly, causing a lack of carbon dioxide and change in PH of the blood. The hands can begin seizing up and sometimes cramping. There is nothing to fear and this is easily remedied by your facilitator.

Shaking: This can occur in sessions when trapped emotions surface and is your body’s way of releasing the trauma, similar to the way animals do in the wild when they experience fight of flight.

Tingling sensations in face or extremities: this is normal during a breathwork session and your facilitator will guide you safely throughout the session into a deeper altered state.

Emotional release: it’s important to feel comfortable and safe with your breathwork facilitator as this is one of the benefits of rebirthing breathwork. Stored and stuck emotions can be released as early as the first session which can bring relief and a sense of calm at the end of the session.

Contra Indications:

Breathwork of this kind is not suitable for those with a history of any heart conditions including, heart attack, angina, palpitations, high blood pressure, heart valves. Those with glaucoma, retinal detachment, recent surgery or physical traumas, with aneurysms or a family history of epilepsy, siezures, severe mental disorders, or those on major medications. Asthma can be helped with breathwork and it is advised to bring the inhaler to the session as a precaution.

If you are or suspect you are pregnant then it is advised not to do breathwork in the first trimester at all and will need to have doctor’s permission to do this from the 2nd trimester onwards.
